What do the codes mean?
The final column of each table (except ancillary vehicles and hire cars) contains a code to indicate the vehicle type, seating capacity, entrance position and any other special fitments. These codes were developed by the PSV Circle and are in common usage among enthusiast societies and publications. They can be explained as follows:
a) First letter or group: the vehicle type

AC	Articulated coach.
B	Single-deck bus.
C	Single-deck coach.
CH	Double-deck coach.
DP	Dual-purpose - a single-deck vehicle built as a bus but with high-back coach-style seating, typically used on longer-distance stage services.
FC	Single-deck coach with a full front as distinct from a half-cab. Used only for full-fronted bodies on chassis that could also be fitted with half-cab bodies and now largely obsolete.
H	Double-deck bus (highbridge) - any closed-top double-decker with conventional seating on the upper deck. The 'L' code is used for lowbridge double-deckers with a sunken side gangway on the upper deck but no vehicles of this layout have been built for the UK since 1968.
M	Minibus - a vehicle based on a van bodyshell with 16 or fewer seats. Coachbuilt vehicles cannot be classed as 'M' even if they have 16 or fewer seats.
O	Open-top double-decker.
RC	Single-deck coach with raised rear section, typically described as an 'observation coach'. This style died out in the 1950s.

b) Numeric portion: seating capacity
Many vehicles have removable seating to provide different capacities and/or accommodate wheelchairs so this is the maximum possible seated passenger capacity with all removable seats in place and all tip-up seats occupied. For double-deckers the top deck capacity is shown first, followed by a slash and then the lower deck capacity. In all cases this figure excludes the driver and courier's seats.

c) Letter following the seating capacity: door/entrance quantity and position (used for all types except 'M' and only includes passenger entrances/exits on the nearside)

C	Centre entrance - in mid-wheelbase.
D	Dual (two) entrances/exits.
F	Front or forward entrance - ahead of or immediately behind the front axle.
R	Rear entrance.

d) Additional letters: special fitments

L	Wheelchair lift.
T	Toilet.
